Green hydrogen
Wednesday, 16 June 2010, 10:00 - 17:00

This workshop will focus on the production of Hydrogen from Renewable Sources to define a clear vision of what Green Hydrogen is and discuss the potentials/barriers inherent to this topic.

In particular, the workshop should discuss the following questions:

(1) SET THE FRAME:  what is green Hydrogen and is there a definition for green hydrogen; sustainability criteria for hydrogen; production technologies & pathways (biogas, RE & electrolysis); state of the art of technologies & research
(2) CASE STUDY & LESSONS LEARNED: demonstrate current successful and lighthouse projects in this field; share best practice
(3) ADVANTAGES & BARRIERS: review the benefits of Green Hydrogen, discuss the obstacles existing for hydrogen from renewable (technological, political, economical) in particular focus on the gap existing between fuel cells and hydrogen stakeholders & Renewable stakeholders
(4) PERSPECTIVES: market pathways &  potentials (demand, capacity, offer)

Speakers and preliminary programme:

Speakers for this workshop will include

  • Ian Williamson, Air Product, Hydrogen energy system Director (UK) will share the vision of Air Product, one of the leading industry player in hydrogen energy.
  • Patrick Schmidt, Ludwig-Bölkow-Systemtechnik GmbH (LBST), Project Manager - Sustainable Energy & Transport (Germany) will discuss the sustainability of hydrogen as a transport fuel and put the discussion about hydrogen in the context of the current European Renewable Energy legislative framework.
  • Dr Pieternel Claassen, Wageningen UR Food & Biobased Research, Hyvolution Project Coordinator (Netherlands), will present the Hyvolution project, a lighthouse project, whose aim is to develop a blue-print for decentral hydrogen production process using local biomass.
  • Prof. Michael Modigell, RWTH Aachen University/Department of Chemical Engineering, Chair of Mechanical Process Engineering, Germany will set the frame of the debate by making a presentation on the perspective for renewable hydrogen
  • Jacques Smolenaars, Hygear, Vice President Business Development (Netherlands) will discuss the current breakthroughs in research to produce hydrogen from biogas reforming (to be confirmed)

Further speakers & organisations to be announced soon.
